October 23, 2018 — New York, New York– Sean “Diddy” Combs’ announced today that he pledges one million dollars to renowned Capital Preparatory Schools network and that the school has been approved to expand to a third location in the Bronx. The additional location, approved to open September 2019, will continue the network’s efforts to provide historically underserved communities access to the same high quality, competitive curriculum seen in more affluent communities.
The announcement represents an expansion in the partnership between Sean “Diddy” Combs and renowned educator Dr. Steve Perry, founder of Capital Prep Schools. Capital Prep Bronx will open to serve 160 students in 6th-7th grade. The school will grow to serve 650 students in 6th -11th grade during an initial five-year term. Capital Prep already has locations in Harlem and Bridgeport, CT with the intention to open more campuses to provide over 2100 students access to a higher affirming education.
“Mr. Combs’ commitment and leadership continue to inspire us. On behalf of the Capital Prep students, parents and teachers I want to express our sincerest gratitude for such a generous gift,” Dr. Perry said. “We know that the families in the Bronx deserve a high-quality academic alternative to their current system. In fact, 40% of our applicants to our Capital Prep Harlem school, 600 kids, have come from the Bronx so there is a real need to serve students in this area. Mr. Combs wanted to open schools to develop leaders. What he’s done with his investment is embody what we expect students to do, which is to invest their resources in our communities.”
Combs, who is a Harlem native and longtime proponent of education and opportunity for young people, worked closely with Dr. Perry to expand the school to new locations as well as build community support and enlist a team of educators, parents and business leaders to bring the idea to fruition. He also is a benefactor.
“I know from my own experience that receiving a great education makes a huge impact on a child’s future. I want these kids to have access to everything they need to succeed, in school and life,” said Combs. “We don’t just teach kids to read, write and code, we teach them to be leaders and what it takes to make a difference in their community, and on the world.”
The Capital Prep strategy is a proven path to success. In 2017, Capital Prep Harbor, in Bridgeport, CT had the highest percent of students to meet the State’s growth goal. This garnered the school the designation as a “School of Distinction” by that state’s Department of Education. Similar growth occurred in Capital Prep Harlem. In 2016, the school’s first year, only 1% of the students were at grade-level in math. Within two years that number grew to 27%. Capital Prep Schools focuses on the neediest students, at the most challenging grades and provides them with access to the love and academic rigor that yield impressive results. Capital Prep Schools is a free, public charter school network, currently operating in New York City and Bridgeport, Connecticut. The schools provide students in grades K-12 with a year-round, college preparatory education that develops lifelong learners, leaders, and agents of social change. This unique approach to educating the whole child has delivered incredible results, sending 100% of its low-income, minority, first-generation high school graduates to four-year colleges every year since its first class graduated at in 2006. Also, 86% of these students remained in college through graduation. Capital Prep Bronx is slated to open its doors September 2019.
